The Story Circle

Stones standing in a circle in Northern Ireland

Over the course of human time, one thing has held communities and cultures together: Creativity. When we begin to tell our stories, we stir this ancient gift. Once stirred, it behaves as a healing agent. It draws our attention to events and people in our past while also awakening in us a new way of seeing our current events and people. Perception changes. How we listen changes. We learn that each of our stories can be told again and again, each time releasing new insight, new energy. Sad stories, we find, are never wholly sad. Happy stories, we find, are often bittersweet. We feel our emotions as welcome aspects of ourselves. We honor them now rather than apologize for them. We understand that without emotions, the world is dry, parched even. When we begin to tell, we quench that thirst. Just by telling. Just by reaching into our pasts and drawing forth an experience and letting it bloom again in the present. We trust ourselves.

In The Story Circle, you will join other shepherds on the path to the Shepherd’s Way. You will have opportunities to tell and to listen. You will also have a support system. We need this support. When we are exploring our lives with storytelling, we soften. We grow back into ourselves, selves that have been scolded for being sensitive, selves that we have had to learn to mask emotion and authenticity. The Story Circle is a place that honors and respects our entire selves.
